Conifers encountered in Alberta, either native or planted for landscaping

In the list below, species native to Alberta (but not necessarily to the Edmonton area) are highlighted in green.

An * indicates those trees that are part of Edmonton’s urban tree canopy: planted in parks, boulevards and other open spaces. Many will also occur on private property. (To see the diversity of species, go to the City’s tree list and map at: https://data.edmonton.ca/Environmental-Services/Trees-Map/udbt-eiax . Selecting a tree from the list will show its distribution and abundance on the map, indicating how likely you are to come across it.)

Other species of conifer are listed as being planted in Edmonton, e.g., Swiss stone pine (Pinus cembra) and Serbian spruce (Picea omorika). If readers know of other species and their whereabouts, please let us know. Spruce species may be difficult to distinguish (and hybrids or cultivars almost impossible), but may add a new dimension to nursery visits!
