Leaflets are dark green on the upper surface, and pale green underneath. Stems are purplish green.

In June and July, the massed seed-heads give the effect of a pinkish, smoky haze over the prairies where these plants grow, giving rise to their other common name, Prairie Smoke.

This clump-forming cool-season grass emerges green and turns gold late in the season, keeping good color and form for winter interest.  

Later blooming flowers provide pollinators with a food source, after many spring and summer flowers have finished flowering.

Veiny meadowrue is a graceful, airy perennial with finely divided, lacy foliage and tall, slender stems.

Aromatic leaves have a fragrance similar to bergamot, which is used in flavouring Earl Grey tea.

If a plant could be shy and elusive, it might be this one.

The single, ephemeral flower on a stalk opens in the morning and closes by end of day; new flowers open the next day.

The Latin fragaria refers to the alluring fragrance of the berries.

The genus name, Achillea, refers to Achilles, of Greek mythology, who was said to have treated his soldiers' wounds with yarrow.
